Radio Interview and Gym Drama

Today my interview on The Robert Scott Bell Show aired.  I say the word "um" way too many times (sad thing is I didn't even notice it at the time), but I don't think it is as all over the place as I feared it would be, so yay. And it was a fun thing to do. Many thanks to RSB for inviting me!

Click here for the link to the show (I start around minute 12, though I think the whole show is interesting).

On Friday, as I was packing for my trip to Philly, the manager from the gym I joined last month called.

"Hi, Heather, how are you today?"

"Doing well. Thank you."

"Great. Well, Angie [my trainer] says you're on your way to Philadelphia today, but I thought I'd call and talk to you about buying more training sessions."

Really?  So a manager thinks it's a good idea to call a busy mom, who is frantically packing, and then ask about money? Is sales/customer service really a lost art?

I say "Thanks so much for calling, but I would have to come in and talk with you in person, but I cannot do that until next week."

So here I'm expecting him to say "Oh sure, we'll let's meet on Monday." or something to that effect. Instead he says "Well, I don't know what you would want to talk about."

 ???!!!

At this point I'm more than annoyed he's talking to me at all when he knew before he called I was busy, and then to say "what would you want to talk about?", so I reply "Well, pricing, and routine, and how I could make it work. But let's talk about this next week, please."

He says "well, I don't know what you mean by pricing. I can give you the same deal as when you first signed up. And you have to do it now, because my pricing changes on Sunday."

Okay. He's completely lost me at this point. Don't ever tell somebody, whom you are asking for $600, "you have to tell me right now, even though I know you're very busy, and really have some concerns about it."

I said "well, I'm very sorry then, that's too much for me to pay at this point."  At this point he says "Okay, have a good trip." and hangs up.

What the heck?  How about "Well, I know you purchased 18, 1-hour sessions before, but we do offer 12, half-hour sessions, which could be a better option for you." ?

I suppose this means I'm on my own after Wednesday. I am wondering if I should continue using the gym, or if I should just use the free weights I have at home.

At some point I really have to get a handle on what types of exercises Mark Sisson recommends.  Does anybody have quick bullet points to offer on this issue?

Cheese Steaks Sandwiches!

Sorry I didn't get to posting yesterday. It was a wild and crazy day. Fun, though.

We had to be at Tom's speaking event (NullifyNow!) around 10am. This was in a hotel with a cafe-like eatery. I ordered an egg sandwich: egg, cheese, and bacon. It was served on an english muffin, but I left that alone. (Tom had a probiotic filled yogurt).

So here's a surprise: I was interviewed on The Robert Scott Bell Show! He wanted to talk about my family's eating cleaner journey. The show runs tomorrow at 11am Central. I don't know how it went, really, I felt kinda all over the place, but it was a fun experience!  Anyway, I've linked to RSB before, but check him out if you are ready to look into healthier living.

For lunch, around 1:30 a very nice guy made a Chipotle run for those of us who were trying to eat cleaner foods. I ordered the pork with everything but rice and beans, which I demolished in about three minutes.

The next several hours were spent selling books, meeting new people, annoying Tom, and cleaning up.

Finally, we were ready to go out for the prized Cheese Steak! So a big group of us head to downtown Philly, we wanted to find a place where the locals hang, (not the touristy spots) so we headed to a place called Ishkabibble's. So we head downtown, there is No Place to park, so we drove around for a while, until we finally found a pay-and-park place. Then we walked a ways to get to the restaurant. It turns out the place was a walk in, order, and eat your sandwich on the go, kind of place. This might have been fun had it not been 40-50 degrees and windy as heck. I kinda like the cold, but not when I'm in sandals, a skirt, and super-thin sleeves. So we headed to a place across the street called "Copa Banana" I think. A very scary, yet, somehow fun, place. It was dark, and slightly tilting, and had several different rooms with lots of music and alcohol. We sat as far away as possible, and ordered cheese steaks. We didn't drink any alcohol, but we did order Mexican Cokes (made with real sugar), and that was the treat for the day.

So cheese steaks... steak, sauteed onions, and provolone cheese on a long roll. I guess I'm not really a fan. I thought it was bland and not really all that good. I didn't eat the bread though... maybe that adds something to it?

We went back to the hotel and hung around with some of the guys for a little while. Just talking and laughing and chugging water.

We're wild and crazy, I tell ya!

Why Fear Pesticides?

I had a commenter ask this:

"I've gone primal, but I still don't buy into the organic movement. Maybe it's its association with PC elitism, or its suspect health benefits, but I think tomatoes are tomatoes. Pesticides are good because they keep plants disease free. I understand the opposition to hormone treatments, but not the antipathy to pesticides. If science enables us to create more from less -- and we can always wash our fruit/veggies -- what's the big deal?"  Tom from NY

Excellent question, Tom!  So I've spent the last five days trying to research answers for you. Not that I don't know in my own mind the answers, but I tried to find real meaty answers (cause we're primal, and that's how we roll), but all I could find were the extremes. Either way too fluffy "so, like, yeah, stay away from pesticides!" or way too difficult and technical.

So I'm linking you to a blog: Why Organic? which has the best of both worlds, simple, yet serious.

And also to a radio show--The Robert Scott Bell Show. He's so well informed about foods, medications, hormones.. everything! that it's always worth listening to his shows. Even if you don't agree with all he says, you will find something in every show.  The episode I link to is not an in-depth discussion, but it does some some good bits. You might--if you're interested--go through his website and see if you can find anything else of interest.

Deciding about whether or not you're going to ingest pesticides is like, everything else in life, a personal decision, but should be a well-informed one.

I personally believe they are the cause of a many metabolic issues. The fact that the bags the pesticides come in have huge warning labels saying to keep it away from kids, makes me worry, since they don't taste great, and kids wouldn't eat handfuls of it, I'm going to assume that even small amounts of it is harmful to children. Why would I feed my kids something that is harmful?

Also, I would suggest you watch the movie Food, Inc. An eye-opening documentary on how food is handled, grown, manipulated here in America. I really couldn't believe how much I learned from this movie.

Thanks for reading and thanks for the comment!
