First Official Weigh-In!

:::Drum Roll please:::

I have officially lost 7 pounds, 2.5% body fat, and 2 inches around my waist. Ta-daaa!

It's like magic. I've never been hungry (except on purpose: choosing to wait an extra half hour until dinner), I don't feel deprived (except of Coke), and I feel so much better!

I have a lot more patience. I can wake up much more easily (which is huge because I *hate* mornings). And I find myself sleeping better, more productive, and just generally more happy.

I am going to call this success!

Tom has lost .... 7 pounds as well! I don't know about the body fat and such, but his stomach is flatter!

None of my girls have lost weight. A very good thing :)  I asked each child what she liked about the diet and each one said great things.

Regina: "Oh I sleep much better. I used to just lay there and it would be really late before I could fall asleep. And I can wake up and not be so tired."

Veronica: "Well... I still want cookies. I fall asleep right away now. And I don't have to spend a lot of time in the bathroom anymore!

Regina: "Yeah, me either!"

Amy:  "Well, I used to toss around all night, and I don't do that anymore."

I can say that all three of them have been less moody overall. They do have their days though where they really hate the "diet" and we have a couple of meltdowns every once in a while, but overall, everything is going really well!

That's it for now. Be back later tonight!

  1. Wow! Congrats! You must feel great! How is Veronica? Has her mood gotten better? Were the girls still so hungry after school? Just for fun I'll attach the link to a list of food and fitness blogs. I can't vouch for them all, but I've enjoyed checking them out. You might find some recipes you like...
Keep up the good work! I think you've gotten through the hard part.
Are you going to add a few "grains" back eventually? If so, I have a "primal" pancake I make that has some oat bran in it. I'll give you the recipe if you like. Finally, are the headaches gone?

  2. Just amazing and very inspirational! Is this two weeks without treats? In my book, treats are red wine and dark chocolate.

  3. Thank you all! We will introduce some grain, very limited though, on rare occasions. And as long as I keep eating regularly, my headaches stay away :)

MZ: I have had a piece of dark chocolate almost every night. Not a huge piece, just enough to have a "sweet fix". We're not big wine drinkers, but that does sound good right about now ;)

  4. Love this, Heather! Congrats!

As someone who has only been at the Primal thing about 3 weeks myself, I can relate to an awful lot of what you've been posting. My beer (still my biggest issue) sculpted body has recently showed signs of progress with just under 7 lbs lost (must be the magic number). Also, my face and torso seem to be 'reshaping' and thinning out slightly - this is a good thing. I look forward to following along as you and your family progress!

  5. Very encouraging! Thanks for sharing!

  6. Heather, Congratulations on your lifestyle change, and I especially congratulate you or getting rid of Coke (all soft drinks) because they are deadly! I encourage you to try drinking a raw, probiotic drink like Kombucha, instead. You will love it and it will help establish good gut flora! I don't know if the Synergy GT brand is available where you live, but if it is, that's the best! If you can't get a good RAW Kombucha in your area, you can make your own... easy and delicous. If you "google" it, you'll find lots of info. :)

  7. Congratulations to the Woods family! Glad to hear that you are noticing the short-term results, and I am positive that you will be happy with the long-term results, too.

Once you are over the short-term transition, for treats, I highly recommend the walnut meal brownies in Mark Sisson's Primal Blueprint cookbook.

  8. Hi Heather,

I am an avid follower of Tom's writings and videos and was directed to this post. Congratulations! I am a pescetarian who has been pretty much converted to the paleo approach while still eating fish as my main source of protein. I guess that makes me a pesco palean.

I have lost about 10 or 12 pounds in about 3-4 weeks of sticking to paleo about 95% of the time. Once every one or two weeks I will have a slice of pizza as a reward.

I actually deviated from pesco the other day the first time in six years and had both gator and frog legs!

    1. As long as your not an Episcopalean! (sorry, couldn't resist)

  9. I had sleep issues for 30 years. After 1 week of primal eating, the problems all went away. I am seeing a common theme between primal eating and improvement in quality of sleep. Being that sleep is highly important to good health, I consider that alone a major success!

  10. Heather,

We had been thinking of going Primal in our house. I purchased the Primal Blueprint and the 21 Day Transformation. But I did not get serious until I read your blog.

I was inspired because if a busy family like yours could get on board, a couple of "empty nestors" like us could do likewise.

We began our Primal journey for real Sunday. Last night I went to bed at 9:00 PM and slept through the night awakening just before 6:00 AM. I haven't done that for years. I could not believe that the third day would give me such a result, but here it is 5:30 PM and I am almost ready for bed.

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us, it was the catalyst I needed at just the right time.

  11. Experience tells me not to obsess too much over the sugar treats. Yes try to eliminate them but you're looking for lifetime changes of habit so fussing over the odd chocolate treat will just cause stress. Dark chocolate (72% cocoa) seems satisfying with a bit lower carb count. The big thing for us was reading Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis. We now look at wheat and grains in general as poison. It has made an amazing difference. Good luck to you and your family in your journey.

  12. I'm so happy for you. I did this a while back. I encouraged Tom to go this route. I've never looked back. I'll never go back. It's a life altering experience. I doubt any of you will ever go back. I wish you and your family the best.

  13. If you're missing the carbonation of Coke, try mixing club soda with lime and lemon juice, it's great.
